PURVIS OF OVERTOWN
Purvis of Overtown is an intimate look at one of America’s most significant self-taught artists of the last century.
A “Social Expressionist,” Young’s spiritual and visionary work captured the struggles and joys of Miami’s inner-city African-American community in thousands of works created over six decades –– from the 1960’s through the 2000’s –– many of them painted on objects scavenged around his neighborhood of Overtown, from discarded library books to scrap plywood.
Purvis of Overtown lluminates the dark side of the art world through the story of the little know, but highly acclaimd African American Folk Artist Purvis Young.
